Sample work Industrial Technology Stage 5: Timber Major Project

Description of activity

This activity relates to the practical project undertaken by students in the Timber focus area. Students plan, develop and construct a quality practical project.

Context

Students are undertaking Cabinetwork 4, a Specialised Module of the Industrial Technology Timber focus area. Through the study of previous modules they have developed skills in the use of a range of hand and power and machine tools and have an understanding of the properties of timber and the processes involved in the cutting, shaping, joining and finishing of timber.

Outcomes

5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects
5.2.2 identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects
5.3.2 selects and uses appropriate materials for specific applications

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • apply design principles in the development and production of a timber product including the selection and use of materials and hardware, and the consideration of function and aesthetics
  • demonstrate quality workmanship through the completed project, including:
    • marking-out and preparation of materials
    • cutting, shaping, joining and finishing
    • selection and use of materials, tools and equipment.

Graded Students Work Samples

Work Sample Assessment

Darcy

Darcy has demonstrated an extensive understanding of design principles and a very high level of competence in technical skills. A range of appropriate materials and tools have been selected and used with proficiency. Modifications have been made to the basic mirror frame and a complex number of curves has been incorporated. The marking out, symmetrical centre curve and stained finish demonstrate a high level of competence. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.

Bailey

Bailey has demonstrated a thorough understanding of design principles and a high level of competence in technical skills. The design is suitable for the feature chosen, and appropriate tools and materials have been selected. The joint construction, carving and finish are of a high quality. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.

Courtney

Courtney has demonstrated a sound understanding of design principles and an adequate level of competence in technical skills. Appropriate tools and materials have been selected. The design elements are appropriate for the materials chosen with the waney edge providing an opportunity to demonstrate particular skills in the construction and gluing processes. The finish is evenly applied and there are no obvious surface preparation faults. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.

Indra

Indra has demonstrated a sound understanding of design principles and an adequate level of competence in technical skills. The design is simple and includes the addition of a found object with an environmental feel. The dimensions of the lower part of the frame have been carefully considered and a conscious choice has been made in the routing of the edges, but the proportions of the timber do not effectively support the overall design. Appropriate tools and materials have been selected, and an adequate level of competence is evident in the joint and finish of the item. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.

Lou

Lou has demonstrated a sound understanding of design principles and an adequate level of competence in technical skills. The use of simple design elements is evident in the shape and ornamentation of the frame. Appropriate materials and tools have been selected and used. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.

Ashley

Ashley has demonstrated a basic understanding of design principles and a limited level of competence in technical skills. Simple design elements have been chosen and a limited range of construction techniques have been demonstrated. There is no evidence of a rebate for the mirror recess but the surface preparation and finish are adequate and suited to the timber and the style. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard.
