Sample work Industrial Technology Stage 5: Animation Activity

Description of activity

Students create an interactive flash movie that shows four changing expressions on the face of an original cartoon character. The character should be sketched in pencil and students include a storyboard of the planned interactive movie.

Context

Students are undertaking Specialised Module 4, of the Industrial Technology Multimedia/Photography focus area. Through the study of previous modules they have developed skills in the selection and use of a range of software and hardware in the development and production of multimedia projects.

Outcomes

A student:
5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects
5.2.2 identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects
5.3.2 selects and uses appropriate materials for specific applications

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • effectively communicate design ideas using:
    • pencil sketches of the character showing the four different expressions
    • a storyboard that communicates the layout of non-linear interactive movie
    • an interactive movie based on the storyboard and character sketches incorporating the changing expressions of the character
  • incorporate a variety of animation and processes
  • apply appropriate graphical techniques and visual communication methods
  • competently use a range of tools and media resources.

Graded Students Work Samples

Work Sample Assessment

Tracy

Tracy has demonstrated an extensive understanding of the features of an effective storyboard, and a very high level of competence in using animation software. The non-linear storyboard clearly communicates a series of scenes, and shows interactive points, movie and button symbols. Storytelling and functionality have both been planned thoroughly. The final presentation is high quality, with the use of 3D raster backgrounds, 2D vector characters and interactive elements. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.

Morgan

Morgan has demonstrated a sound understanding of the features of an effective storyboard, and an adequate level of competence in using animation software. Although the standard non-linear storyboard format has not been used, there is some indication of planned interactivity. The frame and layer drawings show a sound understanding of how the animation program works, and there is evidence of adequate technical skill in the interactive buttons and movie chips with motion tweens. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.

Ricky

Ricky has demonstrated a basic understanding of the features of a storyboard, and a limited level of competence in using animation software. Simple concept drawings have been produced, and both shape and motion tweens have been designed with limited interactivity. There is evidence of planning but the design is linear rather than non-linear. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard.
