Sample work Industrial Technology Stage 5: Timber Core Module 2 - Trinket Box

Description of activity

This is an individual activity that requires students to produce a timber trinket box using a selected range of exotic timbers. Students will:

  • demonstrate the application of design principles in the production of a timber trinket box
  • select and use appropriate timbers, hardware, fixtures and fittings
  • demonstrate the competent use of tools and equipment in the production of a quality project
  • demonstrate the safe and correct use of hand tools, machines and equipment.

Context

Students are undertaking the second module of the Industrial Technology Timber focus area. Through the study of the previous module they have developed skills in the use of elementary hand and machine tools and have a general understanding of the properties of timber and the processes involved in the cutting, shaping, joining and finishing of timber.

This assessment activity is to be delivered in conjunction with classroom work leading to the development of design solutions and associated documentation for a timber trinket box. Prior to this activity students have developed a final design idea for their individual trinket box and produced relevant working drawings and templates.

Outcomes

A student:

5.1.2 applies OHS practices to hand tools, machine tools, equipment and processes

5.2.1 applies design principles in the modification, development and production of projects

5.2.2 identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects

5.3.2 selects and uses appropriate materials for specific applications.

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • apply principles of design in the production of the trinket box, including:
    • selection and use of materials and hardware
    • consideration of function and aesthetics
  • produce a project from developed drawings
  • demonstrate quality workmanship through the completed project, including:
    • marking-out and preparation of materials
    • cutting, shaping, joining and finishing
    • selection and use of materials, tools and equipment
  • observe and follow safe and cooperative work practices.

Graded Students Work Samples

Work Sample Assesment

Taylor

Taylor has displayed a high level of practical skills in identifying and using appropriate materials and tools to produce a well-designed, well-constructed and well-finished project. He/she has considered the suitability of the materials as well as the functional and aesthetic aspects of the trinket box, and incorporated these into the final design. Taylor has accurately interpreted developed drawings and demonstrated sound working practices. The project could have benefited with further consideration of the hinge positioning, and more care taken in marking and cutting out. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.

Bobby

Bobby has utilised an elementary shape to produce an effective design, which is aesthetically enhanced through the surface decoration. Bobby demonstrated sound technical skills through selecting and incorporating several items of hardware fittings and lining. He/she applied design principles to create working drawings and these drawings were interpreted to produce the trinket box. Bobby could have demonstrated a higher level of performance by taking greater care with the surface finishing, marking out and cutting. The addition of lighter weight chain would have been more appropriate in terms of aesthetics. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.
