Description of activity
Students will establish a pot culture designed trial to investigate the effects of phosphorus and nitrogen on plant growth. Students will record and observe plant responses over 10 weeks and graph the results.
Worksheet
Context
Students have been completing a plant enterprise. Throughout this unit they learn the important management strategies for successful and productive pasture production. They become familiar with OHS and are aware of hazards associated with fertiliser use. Students are familiar with the need to use safe operating procedures when measuring and mixing fertilisers for this pot trial.
Outcomes
5.5.1 designs, undertakes, analyses and evaluates experiments and investigates problems in agricultural contexts
5.5.2 collects and analyses agricultural data and communicates results using a range of technologies
5.6.1 applies Occupational Health and Safety requirements when using, maintaining and storing chemicals, tools and agricultural machinery
5.6.2 performs plant and animal management practices safely and in cooperation with others
Criteria for assessing learning
(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- determine the results and draw conclusions
- research nutrient deficiency symptoms of plants
- compile a report that communicates the trial assessment.
Graded Students Work Samples
Work sample assessment
Ashley
Ashley has demonstrated thorough knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in conducting a plant nutrition trial. A high level of competence is evident in the collection of data but there are some errors in the graph scale. Ashley's research skills are well-developed and a bibliography has been included. A high level of competence is evident in the interpretation of results but some aspects of the discussion could be more clearly presented. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.
Lee
Lee has demonstrated sound knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in conducting a plant nutrition trial. Adequate research skills are evident and a bibliography has been included. The interpretation of the results and linking to research demonstrate adequate skills in communication technologies. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard.
Kim
Kim has demonstrated basic knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in conducting a plant nutrition trial. A limited level of competence is evident in the investigation, research and collection of data. The discussion demonstrates basic analytical skills, and would benefit from the use of more resources and referencing. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard.
Sam
Sam has demonstrated basic knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in conducting a plant nutrition trial. This is evident in the discussion of the interaction between plants, soils and nutrients. A limited level of competence is evident in the collection and recording of data. The interpretation of the results and linking to research demonstrates limited skills in communication. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade D standard.
