Sample work English K–10 Stage 3: Activity 6 – Persuasive Text Exposition

Description of activity

Students write a response to an artwork they have discussed in detail in class with a focus on persuasion.  They draft and edit their work thoroughly to produce a published text.

Context

Students have been studying artworks in Creative Arts.  As a class they have discussed the compositions, symbolism and interpretation of various artworks.  Students have analysed the persuasive techniques used to express an opinion in a number of reviews of artworks. They have jointly and independently constructed persuasive texts to express their opinions of artworks.

Outcomes

EN3-5B discusses how language is used to achieve a widening range of purposes for a widening range of audiences and contexts

EN3-7C thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and ideas and identifies connections between texts when responding to and composing texts

EN3-8D identifies and considers how different viewpoints of their world, including aspects of culture, are represented in texts

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • draft, revise and publish an exposition
  • use appropriate written language and structure features for an exposition text
  • express a point of view in writing with supporting statements
  • use a range of strategies to spell familiar and unfamiliar words.
