Sample work English K–10 Stage 2: Activity 3 – Informative Text Procedure

Description of activity

Students write a procedure explaining how to make a model, a paper aeroplane, a photo frame or a snack.

Context

Students have explored the different forms and features of informative texts. They have deconstructed texts to develop an understanding of how texts are structured to achieve a purpose and target a specific audience. Students have discussed the language necessary to explain a process. They were then asked to compose an informative text to explain a step-by-step process.

Outcomes

EN2-2A plans, composes and reviews a range of texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and language

EN2-3A uses effective handwriting and publishes texts using digital technologies

EN2-5A uses a range of strategies, including knowledge of letter–sound correspondences and common letter patterns, to spell familiar and some unfamiliar words

EN2-7B identifies and uses language forms and features in their own writing appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts

EN2-10C thinks imaginatively, creatively and interpretively about information, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts

Criteria for assessing learning

  • use numbers to indicate sequence in a procedure
  • use action verbs and commands
  • use adverbial phrases and adjectives as appropriate to the text

  • demonstrate basic desktop publishing skills using a computer.
