Sample work Creative Arts K–6 Stage 3: Visual Arts: Portrait Lino Cuts

Description of activity

Students make a lino cut of a classmate's face and produce a print.

  1. Students view a range of portraits, such as Archibald Prize entries, and discuss how portraits can express the person’s inner feelings, personality, moods, culture, hobbies etc
  2. Students view and discuss lino and wood block prints by artists such as Margaret Preston and Hokusai. They focus on the positive and negative (black and white) - ie what is taken away and what is left.
  3. Students use a black and white outline print of a head shot photograph to trace their face onto the lino.
  4. They go over the lines on the lino, adding features to highlight the personality of their model.

Suggested materials

Portraits, lino and wood cut prints, photographs of student’s heads (black and white outline prints of these), pencils, scissors, gloves, safety boards

Prior learning

Students have been participating in a unit on identity. They have been introduced to the concept of portraits and have been taught how to use tracing skills. Students have discussed the techniques and range of tools that can be used to produce a lino cut. They have been instructed in how to safely undertake lino cutting including wearing a glove on the hand that is not cutting, using a safety board and cutting away from their body.

Outcomes

Making (VAS3.1)
Investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world
Making (VAS3.2)
Makes artworks for different audiences, assembling materials in a variety of ways.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their:

  • manipulation of and experimentation with different lino cutting and printing techniques
  • representation of the features and personality of their model using a variety of lines, shapes, patterns and textures.

Graded Students Work Samples

Work Sample Assessment

Casey

Casey has demonstrated a very high level of competence in using techniques and form to convey meaning. Casey has drawn on art appreciation and knowledge of Picasso’s work. The subject’s personality is conveyed through the large face and good use of positive and negative space. There is evidence of risk-taking in the removal of a substantial amount of the background to create the desired effect. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 3.

Jo

Jo has used a variety of tools and line thicknesses to investigate the subject matter. There is good use of positive and negative space to express personality and mood. Jo has experimented and taken artistic risks, demonstrating a very high level of competence in conveying ideas. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 3.

Sam

Sam has used a variety of tools and line thicknesses to investigate the subject matter. There is good use of positive and negative space to express personality and mood. Sam has experimented and taken artistic risks, such as repetition of line and shapes. Sam demonstrates a very high level of competence in conveying ideas. Sam demonstrates knowledge of the work of print artists including Picasso. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 3.

Morgan

Morgan has demonstrated a very high level of competence in using form and techniques to investigate the subject matter and convey meaning. There is evidence of careful observation in the accurate proportions, glasses and detailed fringe. Different tools and techniques have been used and risks have been taken in the intricate cutting and use of symbols to portray character. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 3.

Pat

Pat has demonstrated a high level of competence in using techniques and form to convey meaning. Negative focus has been effectively used and there is some evidence of risk-taking as shown in the eyes. The print differs from the lino cut, possibly due to imprecise cutting or uneven ink application, but there is some evidence of experimentation and the subject’s personality is clearly shown. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard at the end of Stage 3.

Chris

Chris has investigated the subject matter using symbols to provide more information than a realistic image, but there is little evidence of the subject’s personality. Different line thicknesses have been used and there is adequate experimentation with techniques. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade C standard at the end of Stage 3.
