Criteria for assessing learning
Students are assessed on their ability to:
• find information for specific purposes in factual texts
• use the table of contents, menu, index, page numbers, headings, captions and key words
to find information
• build word families in preparation for writing
• make brief notes of information relevant to the topic, recording resources used
• use present tense in factual texts such as information reports
• combine clauses by using a variety of conjunctions, eg when, because
• use correct punctuation in published version of own writing, eg capital letters, full stops,
question marks and commas
• use effective planning strategies (adapted)
• use illustrations and diagrams where relevant
• use some conventions of layout to assist the reader.
Evaluating
The teacher makes judgements about the effectiveness of the teaching program based on the
evidence of learning. This informs future programming and instruction.
The class evaluates individual published information reports.
