Jack requires additional practice to acquire and maintain new vocabulary
understanding and using language at the sentence level for sentences longer than eight
words. He uses mostly simple sentences when interacting and giving oral presentations.
Jack can identify letter
words at a level of fluency close to his peers but has more difficulty decoding words as the
language load increases (ie longer words). He recognises most high-frequency words.
Jack has difficulty with spelling which affects his writing fluency and motivation to write.
This is related to his memory of the orthographic representation of letters and words.
Jack’
construct texts. Jack uses point form for tasks that require limited writing. Jack has started
to use word prediction software for writing activities which require him to formulate
sentences or longer texts. The use of word prediction software enables Jack to focus on
the writing processes.
The software selected for Jack is a text-only program (ie not supported by pictures).
The software provides a selection of options from which to choose once the user starts
writing a word. It also has voice input and output capacity
the software was selected because it provides Jack with additional reading practice and
opportunities to listen to what he has written. Jack also preferred it to picture-based word
prediction software because he felt it was more age-appropriate.
