Evidence of learning
The teacher uses students’ work samples, anecdotal notes of observations, checklists of
indicators to determine whether students have made progress as a result of the learning
experiences.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students are assessed on their ability to:
• participate in a class debate on a familiar issue (adapted)
• recognise when an opinion is being offered as opposed to fact (if culturally appropriate)
• listen to a short presentation or argument and respond by challenging or commenting
on a point made
• give considered reasons for opinions and listen to those of others
• use a variety of ways to seek relevant information
• summarise key information
• use group interaction strategies to work collaboratively
• identify and use strategies that speakers use to engage an audience, eg gestures,
eye contact, humour (adapted)
• prepare a spoken presentation considering the needs of a familiar audience such
as predicting questions and planning answers, eg preparing a case for or against
an argument.
Evaluating
The teacher makes judgements about the effectiveness of the teaching program based on
the evidence of learning. This informs future programming and instruction.
The class evaluates each team’s arguments.
