Sample work Mathematics K–10 Stage 3: Mixed operations
Description of activity
Students select 15 numbers between 1 and 100.
They express each of the selected numbers in two different ways using mixed operations, eg 2 = 2 ÷ 2 + 1; 2 = 4 x 1 – 2.
Context
Students have calculated solutions to problems involving mixed operations and used formal written algorithms.
Outcomes
MA3-1WM describes and represents mathematical situations in a variety of ways using mathematical terminology and some conventions
MA3-2WM selects and applies appropriate problem-solving strategies, including the use of digital technologies, in undertaking investigations
MA3-5NA selects and applies appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction with counting numbers of any size
MA3-6NA selects and applies appropriate strategies for multiplication and division, and applies the order of operations to calculations involving more than one operation
Criteria for assessing learning
(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- use appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction
- use appropriate strategies for multiplication and division
- express numbers in different ways using mixed operations.
