Description of activity

Students research the contribution of an Aboriginal person to Australian society and write an imaginative biographical or autobiographical narrative to be included in a collection of narratives based on the lives of First Australian Heroes.

Context

Students have explored Aboriginal narratives as part of the unit of work My Story, Your Story and have become aware of narrative as a key feature in the development of personal cultural identity. They have identified, explored and evaluated the use of narrative conventions in texts from different cultures and in different media. Students have critically analysed the context, purpose, values and attitudes, language forms and features, and structures of texts. They have produced a range of different types of writing and have an understanding of the purpose, language features and structures of writing for a specified audience.

Criteria for assessing learning

Students will be assessed on their ability to:

• Compose an imaginative narrative about an Aboriginal person incorporating elements such as narrative voice, historical and cultural context
• Demonstrate originality, imagination and ingenuity in content and language
• Understand the relationship between audience, purpose, language choices and forms
