Sample work Creative Arts K–6 Stage 2: Visual Arts: Drawing Bicycles
Description of activity
Students experiment with a range of drawing materials and techniques to represent the subject matter of bicycles.
- Students carefully observe a bicycle in the classroom or outside and then make a large, detailed drawing of the bicycle based on their observations.
- Students use a viewing frame to focus on an interesting section of the bike. They look at lines, patterns and shapes, and draw what they see.
Outcomes
Making (VAS2.1)
Represents the qualities of experiences and things that are interesting or beautiful by choosing amongst aspects of subject matter.
Making (VAS2.2)
Uses the forms to suggest the qualities of subject matter.
Criteria for assessing learning
Students will be assessed on their:
- use of a range of drawing materials and techniques to represent the qualities of a bicycle
- focus on the textures, shapes, lines and patterns of the bicycle
Prior learning
Students have brainstormed and identified all the parts of a bicycle. They have drawn a bicycle from memory and discussed the various textures, shapes, patterns, colours and lines that make up the structure of the bicycle. They have viewed prints or postcards of artworks about bicycles and discussed the differences between the artworks and the types of bicycles and their uses.

Work Sample Assessment
Sam
Sam has demonstrated a very high level of competence in representing the subject matter of a bicycle. There is evidence of careful and detailed observation in the handlebars, spokes, wheels, gears, reflectors, frame and seat. Sam demonstrates a very high level of competence in using shading, thickness of lines and tones in this sketch. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 2.
Morgan
Morgan has demonstrated a very high level of competence in representing the subject matter of a bicycle. There is evidence of careful and detailed observation in the handlebars, spokes, wheels, brakes, reflectors, gears, frame and seat. Morgan has applied skills and knowledge to a new situation. Morgan's use of line, tone and shading in this sketch demonstrates an independent, bold and informed choice in how the bicycle is represented. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard at the end of Stage 2.
Kim
Kim has experimented with some drawing techniques, such as line and shading, to represent the subject matter. There is evidence of careful observation in the detailed section of a bicycle. Although there has been minimal use of tools, Kim has made effective choices to represent subject matter and used a high level of competence for the variations in tone, line, patterns and shape. Kim needs to further develop drawing techniques to depict texture to illustrate the qualities of subject matter. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard at the end of Stage 2.
