Section I – Response to Prescribed Text – Part A
Students should:
- read the whole extract before attempting to answer the questions
- read the questions carefully and address all aspects in their response
- explain the quotes given in Chinese and their significance in the relevant context rather than just translating them
- demonstrate knowledge of all the extracts for study and the whole prescribed text where required
- respond in English using their own words
- use the lines given as an indication of length of response required.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide both reasons, her injury and disappointment with no student coming to visit (Q1a)
- describe Ms Sa’s personality with effective reference to the prescribed text (Q1b)
- provide a thorough analysis of how the film techniques in the extract affect the audience, for example, the close shots allow the audience to feel the emotional interaction between the characters (Q1c)
- comprehensively analyse the statement, particularly the link between ‘the way of communicating’ and ‘immaturity/maturity’ (Q1d)
- respond to the question with detailed reference to the film (Q1d).
Areas for students to improve include:
- carefully reading and examining the questions
- referring to ONE other scene rather than multiple scenes (Q1d)
- supporting the argument with extensive reference to this extract and ONE other scene in the film (Q1d).
Section I – Response to Prescribed Text – Part B
Students should:
- address all parts of the question fully
- write in the type of text as specified in the question
- address the specified context, purpose and audience of the question
- write from a particular perspective as required by the question
- demonstrate their knowledge of the chosen extract and other relevant parts of the text when responding to the question
- support their response with evidence from the text
- use their own words in their response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- reflect on both what happened in the classroom and in the dormitory
- write an effective response with authentic and sophisticated expressions, for example, ‘像老虎一样凶’、
‘条条大路通罗马’、 ‘万般皆下品,唯有读书高’、 ‘不到黄河不死心’、 ‘恨铁不成钢’
- use correct format of a diary entry.
Areas for students to improve include:
- referring to the given extract, for example, students should quote or paraphrase at least one or two sentences or phrases
- avoiding the retelling of the story without reflections
- adhering to the Chinese character word limit.
Section II – Writing in Chinese
Students should:
- address all aspects of the question
- write in the relevant text type as specified in the question
- use appropriate register consistently throughout the response
- ensure that the content of their response is relevant to the question
- plan and sequence their response to ensure it is coherent
- demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary, expressions and where relevant, idiomatic language related to the issues prescribed for study
- support their argument, point of view or opinion with relevant ideas and information
- manipulate the language authentically and creatively with correct use of grammar and syntax to meet the requirements of the task
- use the dictionary to choose appropriate word, expression or phrase for the context, purpose and audience of the question
- proofread and edit their work.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present the argument in a logical and sequential order with a clear introduction and an insightful conclusion
- use authentic and sophisticated expressions, for example, 追求与目标、每时每刻、依赖、亲情、友情、恋情、命中注定、衣来伸手、饭来张口、社会责任与义务、家和万事兴、百善孝为先、传统价值观、忽略、代价
- support their arguments with most relevant examples to effectively answer the question.
Areas for students to improve include:
- writing a title for an article and using paragraphs
- consistently linking the argument and examples back to the question
- avoiding the repetition of the same point of view
- proofreading their response for grammatical and lexical accuracy.
