The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (the Standards) describe what teachers should know and be able to do. Specifically, the knowledge, practice and professional engagement needed for high quality effective teaching that improves student learning outcomes.
The Standards use nationally agreed indicators of teacher quality to guide the preparation, support and development of teachers throughout their careers from Graduate to Proficient Teacher, to Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher.
The NSW teacher accreditation system, overseen by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), provides a rigorous assessment of evidence for teachers’ achievement of the Standards.
There are seven Standards:
The Standards cover three teaching domains:
Each Standard has a set of Standard Descriptors for each career stage:
The Standards are also available in a downloadable PDF (28 pages, 923KB) and you can order free hard copies from the NESA shop.
