help
students
to
reflect
on
their
learning
by
asking
questions
or
instructing
students
to
explain
their
thinking.
It
is
important
for
teachers
to
provide
students with
sufficient
time
to
respond
to
questions
(Westwood
2006).
Examples of questions and instructions:

How did you work it out?
•
Show me how you worked it out.
•
What steps did you take?
•
How did you know that word says ‘shut’?
•
What have you tried?
•
Did you follow the instructions (scaffold)?
•
Did you have a strategy?
•
Explain what you were thinking.
•
What do you think comes next?
•
How did you know when you were finished? (Howell et al. 1993)
•
How did you know that sound? … that word? … that answer?
