Reading
Difficulties students may experience in the
reading strand
Students may experience difficulties with decoding and/or comprehension in the reading
strand. Students who experience difficulty with reading will experience difficulty in all
curriculum areas when reading is required (Strickland, Ganske & Monroe 2002).
Decoding
Decoding involves translating written words into their spoken equivalents. It includes the
application of letter–sound knowledge and whole-word recognition.
Note:
Students may demonstrate their ability to decode words in other
ways, for example sign language.
To comprehend printed text, students need to decode text with accuracy and

thus freeing up attention to enable them to focus on meaning.
Comprehension
Students commence reading instruction with varying levels of language comprehension.
Before learning to read, language comprehension is developed through
