How it works

Teachers who have received Provisional or Conditional Accreditation are required to work towards Proficient Teacher Accreditation over a set timeframe. This involves you demonstrating that you meet the Standard Descriptors at Proficient teacher level in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and collecting evidence of practice.

The path to Proficient Teacher Accreditation is a structured induction into teaching that supports the development of your practice at the level of Proficient Teacher. It develops confidence and expertise in the practice of teaching through consistently meeting the Standard Descriptors at this level.

Steps toward Proficient Teacher accreditation:

Get to know the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers describe seven Standards outlining what teachers should know, and be able to do, to teach effectively. Accreditation is the structure that supports teachers to meet these Standards.

Talk to your principal/service director or the teacher you report to

As the teacher, you are responsible for initiating and actively working towards your accreditation. Once you start working in a school/service, it is important to indicate to your principal/service director and/or the person you report to, that you are working towards Proficient Teacher so you can be supported through the accreditation process.

Be clear on how long you have to complete your accreditation

Accreditation at Proficient Teacher is a condition of your employment in any NSW school/service. If you don’t meet the requirements for Proficient Teacher, within your timeframe, you will no longer be eligible for employment in any NSW school/service.

Specific timeframes apply to becoming accredited at Proficient Teacher:

  • Provisionally accredited teachers who are employed on a full-time basis have three years while part-time and casual teachers have five years.
  • Conditionally accredited teachers who are employed on a full-time basis have four years, while part-time and casual teachers have six years.

Your timeframe is calculated from the date you are given Provisional or Conditional accreditation. You can check this information by logging in to your online account.

Be proactive: collect evidence and build professional relationships

Once you understand the Proficient Teacher Standard Descriptors, then you can start to:

  • Collect evidence of your teaching practice against the Standards; the evidence should be drawn from your everyday teaching practice. You may approach this by:
    • Appropriately selecting evidence against at least one of the Standard Descriptors for each of the seven Standards. You don't need documentary evidence against all the Standard Descriptors. One item of evidence can be used to demonstrate more than one Standard Descriptor
    • Choosing evidence wisely that consistently demonstrates the Standard Descriptors which promote quality teaching
  • Annotate selected evidence to show how each links to the Standard Descriptors. This should be done in consultation with your supervisor.

The following resources are available to support you at this stage.

During this time, you are encouraged to foster regular communication with colleagues. Discussing your practice and seeking professional engagement with them within and outside the school/service are good habits to develop.

Undertaking professional development activities is expected and can be counted as evidence towards your accreditation at Proficient Teacher. You can log into your online account and search for relevant professional development courses. You don’t need to record the hours of PD at this level.

Completing 100 hours of Professional Development is only required when maintaining accreditation.

Finalise accreditation by set timeframe and submit your Accreditation Report

In general, the final steps in your accreditation process, involves:

  • your supervisor being confident that your practice is consistently meeting the Standard Descriptors
  • your supervisor writing an Accreditation Report and submitting it to the principal/service director to sign and validate
  • the Accreditation Report being sent to your sector or school/service system’s Teacher Accreditation Authority (TAA) along with selected evidence of your work
  • the TAA making the decision about your accreditation and it being recorded on the NSW Education Standards Authority's (previously BOSTES) database
  • your documents being submitted to the NESA.

Casual and part time teachers

Many teachers work on a casual or part time basis in NSW. As a casual or part time teacher it is necessary that you achieve Proficient Teacher accreditation. Casual and part time teachers have the flexibility to collect evidence across a number of schools/services and use their selection to complete their accreditation at one school/service. If you are a casual or part time teacher, then you are allocated additional time to meet proficient teacher accreditation requirements.

Talk to the NSW Education Standards Authority if you have any questions

The Authority oversees the system of accreditation and recognition of teachers’ professional capacity against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.  The Authority does not make the accreditation decision it advises and helps your employer and your TAA with your accreditation.
