To start working as a teacher in NSW you need to be accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authortiy, NESA (previously BOSTES). To be accredited to teach in a NSW school, overseas trained teachers must hold recognised qualifications and may also be required to pass an English language proficiency test. You need to complete at least 10 hours of Refresher Courses in your first year of provisional accreditation.
How does accreditation work
To start or return to working as a teacher in a NSW school, you must be provisionally or conditionally accredited with NESA. You must then achieve and maintain Proficient Teacher Accreditation. Higher levels of accreditation are also available to teachers who want to extend themselves professionally and be recognised for stand-out achievements.
Checking your qualifications
To be accredited by NESA to teach in a NSW school, interstate and overseas trained teachers must hold equivalent qualifications and meet the same requirements for Provisional or Conditional Accreditation as graduates of accredited NSW teaching degrees.
Get your documents translated
As part of your application for Provisional or Conditional Accreditation, overseas trained teachers need to provide certified copies of any original language documents (such as your qualifications and proof of identity) as well as certified copies of a translation of those documents.
Do an English language proficiency test
You may receive advice that you need to successfully complete an approved English language proficiency test to be provisionally or conditionally accredited.
Complete 10 hours of Refresher Courses
If you are a returning or overseas teacher you need to complete at least 10 hours of Refresher Courses in your first year of provisional accreditation.
Working as an exchange teacher
Many teachers from overseas come to NSW to work as a school teacher as part of an exchange program. To work as an exchange teacher in NSW you need to be provisionally or conditionally accredited by NESA.
How to find work as a NSW teacher
Once you have been provisionally or conditionally accredited by NESA, you need to apply for employment with your employer of choice. You will be required to provide your employer with evidence of your Provisional or Conditional Accreditation.
