English K6 Support Materials for Students with Special Education Needs

A Teacher helping two special needs students in class

The purpose of the English K–6 Support Materials for Students with Special Education Needs is to assist teachers to meet the learning needs of students who are experiencing difficulty in acquiring and using knowledge, skills and strategies in the English Key Learning Area (KLA).

Students may experience learning difficulties with varying degrees of intensity and duration and for a range of reasons. The English K–6 Support Materials for Students with Special Education Needs provides advice on using the Teaching and learning cycle to identify, program for and address students’ learning needs in English. Examples of the difficulties that students may experience in the strands Speaking and listening, Reading and Writing, as well as procedures and strategies to identify and address these difficulties, are explored. While the strands are interrelated, a student experiencing difficulty in one strand (or aspect of a strand) might not experience difficulty in the other strands.

The English K–10 Syllabus acknowledges that a variety of verbal or nonverbal communication forms and/or systems can be used to communicate. These support materials include a fifth section on Communication to assist teachers in addressing the learning needs of students with complex communication needs within the context of the English K–10 Syllabus.

Finally, several case studies, including video references, further illustrate effective procedures and strategies to assist students with particular learning needs.

The English K–6 Support Materials for Students with Special Education Needs provide advice and support that are effective for all students, both for the prevention and remediation of difficulties.
