HSC showcases and events

Each year there are a number of Higher School Certificate (HSC) showcases and exhibitions of student work. You can find out more about these events, including dates, venues, and how to book, below.


ARTEXPRESS is an annual exhibition of exemplary artworks created by students for the HSC in Visual Arts. The works represent a broad range of subject matter, approaches, styles and media including painting, photomedia, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, documented forms, textiles and fibre, ceramics, time-based forms and collections of works.

ARTEXPRESS represents the high standards and diversity achieved by Year 12 Visual Arts students in New South Wales schools.

Callback is the showcase of exemplary performances and compositions by HSC students of Dance. Performances of Callback have provided valuable demonstrations of HSC standards to Dance students and teachers since 1993. This is a great opportunity for students who are currently studying HSC Dance as well as for students who are contemplating undertaking this as a course of study. At the conclusion of each matinee performance there is a Q&A with the performers and HSC markers.

Callback will be held in the Everest Theatre, Seymour Centre, in February 2017. As well as the performances, HSC student workshops will be held each day.

Shape 2016

A new look Technology exhibition was launched in 2016. The expanded exhibition features a selection of exemplary Major Projects from HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students in 2016.

Shape 2016 opens at the Powerhouse Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences on 24 February 2017 and closes on 7 May 2017.

Shape 2016 seminars

In 2017, the seminar program will be open to Preliminary and HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students.

Year 12 students will hear from and engage with industry professionals and examine the marking guidelines relevant to their subject.

Year 11 students will hear from industry professionals, learn about sustainability in design and production processes, and take part in a digital learning experience related to their course.

All seminars include time to view the exhibition.

ENCORE is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the HSC Music examinations. It is held annually at the Sydney Opera House.

InTech is an exhibition of outstanding Major Projects from HSC Industrial Technology students.

The exhibition covers all Industrial Technology focus areas – Timber Products and Furniture, Automotive, Electronics, Graphics, Metal and Engineering, and Multimedia. The exhibition includes students’ folios that document the design, management, communication and production of their projects.

OnSTAGE is a presentation and exhibition of group and individual performances and projects by HSC Drama students. The OnSTAGE season at the Seymour Centre is presented by the NSW Education Standards Authority and the NSW Department of Education.

OnSTAGE performances

The season of exemplary Drama performances from the 2016 Higher School Certificate will preview on Saturday 4 February 2017 and run from Monday 6 February to Friday 10 February 2017 at 1.30 pm and 7.30 pm in the York Theatre, Seymour Centre.


Writers OnSTAGE/OnSCREEN features rehearsed readings by professional actors and directors of two scripts from individual projects of the HSC Drama examination, plus the screening of three exemplary videos.

The readings and screenings will take place in the Everest Theatre, Seymour Centre from Wednesday 8 February to Friday 10 February 2017 at 10.30 am.

OnSTAGE and Writers OnSTAGE/OnSCREEN may include contemporary political and social issues and some language that may offend. It is advisable to take this into consideration when deciding the age group of students invited to attend.

OnSTAGE exhibition

Exemplary individual projects by HSC Drama students will be on exhibition in the foyer of the Seymour Centre from Saturday 4 February to Friday 10 February 2017. Projects will include costume and set design, promotion and program, and theatre review.

Schools can download the booking form and send completed form to the Seymour Centre from 17 November 2016. The Box Office will begin processing priority school bookings on Friday 25 November 2016.

Please allow a minimum of 48 hours before contacting the box office to enquire about the progress of your request.

Drama Workshops

Drama workshops focusing on the Individual Project component of the HSC Drama course will be presented by BOSTES in association with The Arts Unit, Department of Education during the 2017 OnSTAGE season.

Led by experienced HSC Drama teachers, students will gain insight into:

  • criteria for successful Individual Projects within their chosen area
  • how to develop a concept for the Individual Project
  • how to undertake effective research to inform the development of the Individual Project
  • how to analyse, synthesise, evaluate effectively
  • practical solutions and advice for the execution of the project.

The two-hour workshops will be held at The Arts Unit, Corner of The Boulevarde and Toothill Street, Lewisham. These workshops are for:

  • Performance (Yr 12)
  • Performance Intro – aimed at Preliminary students
  • Design
  • Critical Analysis
  • Script/Video

Young Writers Showcase

Young Writers Showcase is an anthology of some of the extraordinary Major Works in print, sound and visual media submitted for the HSC English Extension 2 course.

The anthology is launched at the State Library of NSW as part of wordeXpress.
